2019-20 bushfire and storm season responders honoured for dedication and service

ACT Government personnel and volunteers have been recognised for their dedicated efforts through the 2019-20 bushfire and storm season at the National Emergency Medal & ACT Emergency Medal ceremony.

The 2019-20 bushfire and storm season was a season many of us will never forget. Unpredictable weather, record-breaking fire conditions, continual smoke haze, heatwaves and a hailstorm saw challenges that have not been faced since the 2003 Canberra bushfires.

As a result of these severe events, numerous personnel from ACT Government agencies came together to help protect Canberrans and neighbouring areas that were impacted.

More than 900 recipients across ACT Government are being awarded with the National Emergency Medal & ACT Emergency Medal, 689 of which are from the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ACTESA).

ACT Emergency Services Agency Commissioner Georgeina Whelan says that the National Emergency Medal & ACT Emergency Medal is an opportunity for the Federal Government, ACT Government and our community to formally acknowledge the acts of courage and commitment demonstrated by these exceptional volunteers and personnel.

“I am forever grateful for the selfless and dedicated service given across government through a challenging 2019-20 season,” said Commissioner Whelan.

“The Emergency Medal is a small gesture of gratitude, but no award or medal can ever encapsulate how deeply thankful we are for the sacrifices and dedication given during that time” said Commissioner Whelan

ACT Emergency Services Agency Commissioner Georgeina Whelan says that by celebrating these outstanding individuals Canberrans can find comfort in the community spirit that took place through such a difficult period.

“The effects of the 2019-20 bushfire and storm season are still felt deeply within the community today and will continue to be for many of our lifetimes,” said Commissioner Whelan.

“By celebrating these incredible first responders and government personnel we are able to find the positives in such a dark time and reflect on a beautiful moment of our community coming together, which should never be forgotten,” continued Commissioner Whelan.

ACTESA have embraced the lessons learnt from the 2019-20 season and have invested in improvements that will strengthen emergency planning, preparation, and response.
