Canberra, are you storm ready?

Today (1 September 2020) marks the first official day of the 2020-21 storm season, as the ACT typically experiences an increase in severe weather events from September to March each year.

The ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) is encouraging the Canberra community to start preparing now by:

  • Understanding what to do before, during and after a storm
  • Maintaining your yard and balcony by securing or removing items that could blow around in strong winds
  • Cleaning your gutters regularly and fixing roof damage to prevent blockages, flooding and leaks
  • Trimming tree branches that could fall on your property or vehicles
  • Making permanent repairs to previous storm damage
  • Check your insurance policy is current and adequate and;
  • Preparing an emergency plan and emergency kit.

From December 2019 to January 2020, ACTSES responded to more than 4,500 requests for assistance from the community following storm activity, including the hailstorm that caused significant damage across the Territory.

“A large number of those requests for help could often be avoided if the community was proactive in taking simple steps to prepare or maintain their property before the ACT storm season arrives,” ACTSES Acting Chief Officer Matt Shonk said.

“We ask the community to take the time now to prepare your property, understand what to expect during a storm and what to do when the storm has passed.”
