The Justice and Community Safety Directorate (JACS) has been advised of some hazardous materials in a worksite being managed by our building contractor in the Gungahlin Joint Emergency Services Centre (JESC).
This contamination was found as part of the contractor’s due diligence work during refurbishment activities on 28 February 2024.
The contractors found lead containing dust on the top of the ceiling tiles in the roof cavity in one section of the building.
Diesel particulates were located across the entire building.
Safety is our highest priority and as a precaution, all Emergency Services Agency and ACT Policing staff are temporarily being relocated off-site. Staff will not return until we have fully assessed the situation and can ensure that it is safe to do so.
There is no health risk to nearby residents.
JACS has notified WorkSafe ACT and the site is undergoing further assessment to determine the extent of the contamination.
JACS is committed to working closely with WorkSafe ACT to take the necessary action once the assessment is complete.
We have high safety standards and will continue to ensure our buildings are safe for staff and visitors.
We appreciate the community may be concerned with this arrangement and we have already started executing our business continuity plans.
We will do our utmost to keep the community safe and ensure service delivery.
We commit to keeping our community informed about this situation as we receive more information in coming days.
