ACT Fire & Rescue responded to an Emergency Triple Zero (E000) call received at approximately 2:40am reporting a smouldering mattress. The ESA Communication Centre call-taker advised the caller to evacuate the unit and close the door.
Three adults and three children safely evacuated the unit and awaited emergency services on scene.
Firefighters arrived to the ground floor unit on Bourke Street in Barton to find the mattress alight. After being extinguished, the mattress was removed from the building and atmospheric monitoring and air ventilation operations were conducted.
The cause of the incident was determined to be a lamp which had fallen onto a bed where children were sleeping, causing the mattress to smoulder.
No injuries have been reported.
ACT Fire & Rescue reminds the community to ensure all electrical appliances are safely positioned away from sleeping areas. Further information on home fire safety can be found on the ESA website - /community-information/home-fire-safety/
