In a life threatening emergency dial Triple Zero (000)
Storm and Flood Assistance
At approximately 6:15 this morning a working smoke alarm alerted a mother and her young child to self-evacuate their family home in Richardson.
ACT Fire & Rescue (ACTF&R) crews arrived to find a small kitchen fire which had ignited from the stove-top.
ACT Ambulance Service assessed the pair on scene.
After further investigation it appears the resident cat knocked a roll of plastic wrap onto the touch-sensor stove top.
ACTF&R would like to remind Canberrans that when the stove top is not in use please lock the sensors and switches, and ensure you have a working smoke alarm.
